Chapter 23

“Hey!” Abby was right outside the porta potty when Zoe came out. Zoe jumped. “There you are.”

As if they hadn’t announced where they were going. Even if they had waited in line for what seemed like forever.

“Brandt made it to the finals.” Abby said wide-eyed, ponytail swinging.

“Wow,” Zoe said, though she hadn’t realized there were finals. Nor that there had been that many more races since they’d been waiting. Did that mean they had to stay that much longer? Zoe was ready to go between Case’s mood and Denay’s even though she needed to figure out a way to talk to Denay alone. “That’s impressive.”

“Good thing he got his motorcycle repaired,” Abby said.

When Katie stepped out of the porta potty she’d been in she paused when she spotted Abby for a second. Then started walking toward them. What was that about?

“Ugh I hate porta potties,” Abby said. “But when you gotta go, you gotta go. Anyway.” She grabbed Zoe by the arm and pulled her off to the side as if she was purposely leaving Katie out.

Zoe stopped and turned toward Katie and waited for her.

Abby’s phone buzzed. Zoe glanced over as Abby looked at it.

The screen read. Bae: We need to talk.

Bae? Who the heck calls their boyfriends bae anymore?

“I didn’t know you had a boyfriend,” Zoe said just as Katie approached.

“What’d I miss?” Katie smiled, but it didn’t look genuine.

“Abby has a boyfriend.”

Abby’s face flushed. Maybe not for long given the words of the text, but she had one.

“Oh?” Katie tilted her head. But there was something about her reaction that wasn’t quite right. “Do I know him?” Katie raised her eyebrows.

Zoe tilted her head. Technically Katie didn’t know anyone. At least not that she could remember.

“No, um, it’s just some guy. Nothing really. Probably won’t even turn into anything.” Abby shoved her phone in her back pocket.

Katie’s jaw was clenched as she glared at Abby. There was something she clearly was not telling. Did she remember?

As they walked back to their seats, Zoe couldn’t help but let her mind wonder. The way Abby liked to copy her friends, did she steal Katie’s older guy from her? But that wouldn’t make sense. You’d think Abby was the one who’d end up in the pool if that was what happened.

“Look who made it back,” Denay said as they came up the stairs. Trent watched Katie.

Case scooted over for Zoe. “Your boy made it to the next round,” he mumbled.

It made Zoe’s face flush. She reached over and grabbed Case’s hand then she kissed his cheek. “You’re my only boy. You know that.” She whispered in his ear.

“You two are so cute. Adorable, really.” Abby gushed. She stared at Case and Zoe.

Case smiled. “Thank you. I seem to think she is pretty cute.” Case squeezed her hand.

“Please.” Trent laughed.

Case’s grip tightened. He didn’t like Brandt, and it seemed he didn’t like Trent, either.

Denay stared straight ahead. Katie was on her phone, not even paying attention to the race. Zoe
